5 Reasons I Have Failed at Blogging in the Past
Its the start of a new year, which naturally brings feelings and thoughts of self improvement. Whether you make resolutions or not, this time of year can be beneficial to us in that it allows us to take a step back and reflect on the things that are working, and make a plan for the things that are not.
I have wanted to blog for a few years now, but there are a number of reasons I haven’t committed to it seriously.
One: Do people even read blogs anymore?
The answer I see over and over is YES! People are still looking to blogs to find recipes, diy projects, fashion advice, and more! This is good news for me, as I plan to bring you a LOT of diy content- I love me a good project. There is however a bigger reason that convinced me to take blogging seriously. If other social media platforms were to disappear tomorrow, all of my creative work from the last decade would go with it. I would have to start from scratch, which is essentially what I am doing now. This fact alone has motivated me to create a catalog of work that I know will not disappear one day.
Two: Not making a plan and schedule
With social media as well as my blog, my approach in the past has just been to throw sh*t at the wall and see what sticks! I am learning this is not a great strategy for growth. Making a content schedule is a must, not only for growth, but for accountability. I want to show up for my readers on a consistent basis.
Three: Fear
This is a big one, and I feel like it holds a lot of people back. Putting yourself and your life on the internet is a very vulnerable thing! Am I even a decent writer? Will anyone like or relate to what I am writing about? Will anyone other than my mom read this?!
I saw another creator pointing out that the reason people are not successful in online spaces is that they have a fear of being seen. They turn their camera on and feel ‘silly’ or ‘cringe’. We are too often worried about what other people will think, so this is my attempt to put aside those fears, and be seen.
Four: Imposter Syndrome
With so much content across so many social media platforms, it is too easy to compare ourselves to others and feel less than with our own content. We each have our own skillset and personality to show the world and there is room for all of it.
Five: Not committing to the blog or myself
Plain and simple, in order to be successful at something, you need to make a conscious decision to commit to it. This is something I have not done- up until now. As I hit ‘publish’ on this post I am making a decision to commit to this blog, but in an even bigger way, to commit to myself.
